Simple. Some team owners take revenue from their team and pocket it, while other owners (i.e. George Steinbrenner) takes the revenue and puts it back into the team in order to make improvements. Don’t forget about the luxury tax that "big market" teams pay to "small market teams". The small market teams could use that money to make their teams better. Some do, others don’t.
EDIT–I’d appreciate it if I wasn’t blatantly mocked right in front of my face. Is that asking too much?

The first answer is partially right.
But very wrong as well.
True, the Steinbrenners do put more money into the Yankees than other teams. But that is helped by the fact that they have more money and have a large fan base. George Steinbrenner is very cheap, but smart. He realizes that he has many "fans" and many of them are famous/rich. So then he decides to build a new stadium and raises ticket prices. But fans still come. So as a result, he makes much more money than others.
Also, they are in New York, where it is heavily populated.
The Yankees have the biggest fan base, so they are able to sell.
So it’s true that Steinbrenner puts more into his team. But some owners are not able to do that. He is a very cheap owner who uses the rich to his advantage.

it’s because the yankees profit from having a loyal fanbase ”WORLDWIDE” and an owner who is not cheap and who cares about winning and they care about their fans:)

Yankees fans can be such idiots….you just won’t except that you DO buy the championship, insisting that the Yankees are saints who only care about the fans. Yeah right. Say that to ARod’s inflated wallet.

Steinbrenner, weather you like him or not, you gotta respect him. He’s done everything he could to get the Yankees to where they are today. Back when he started, he put all the money he earned back into the organization, to make it better, to buy players. Other team owners, pocketed the money they make instead of putting it back into their organization, because they’d rather earn money then take a risk and try to make the team better.

I am sick of people saying that the yankees buy their championship. that is impossible to do literally impossible. No matter how much money the yankees spend it does not guarantee a playoff berth and a world championship. That is all won on the field just look at the World Series Winners over the past 10 years. There are so many different teams.
2009 Yankees
2008 Phillies
2007 Red soxs
2005Chicago White Sox
2004Boston Redsox
2003Florida Marlins
2002Anaheim Angels
2001Arizona Diamondbacks
2000New York Yankees
Each of those years the yankees still had there high payroll and still every year they lost. There players get paid more because it is a lot more pressure to play in New York then anywhere else many players can not handle it so to the players who can they pay them more. The other teams do have the money to make there team better but they do not spend it on the team so they do not have a strong fan base because there team does not commit to winning every year like the yankees do. Baseball is a hard sport to predict and anything could happen no matter how much money you spend there will never be a guarantee win or performance by any player so you can never truly by a championship. To make that statement is pure ignorance.

The Yankees have a lot of fans because of their many championships. They get money from that huge fan base. They use that money to get players who in turn help them win more championships. The Yankees owner is an owner that wants his team to win AT ANY COST. Other team owners do this.Look at the Red Sox who have been arguably the best team this decade. They have a huge fan base. They get money from this fan base. They go and get players like Dice-K and Jason Bay. But this does not always work. The Mets have a large fan base. They have the highest payroll in the NL. They have missed the playoffs in three straight years. There are teams that spend their money wisely and teams that don’t.

I disagree that championships=money.
It’s not because people all over the world watch the Yankees. I doubt many people outside this country even follow American baseball.
Yankees gear is a fashion item. People that don’t even follow the sport wear Yankees gear because it is fashionable. Look at the Chav-types in England. I’m sure a majority of them never watched a baseball game but lots of them own Yankees hats. Urban entertainers made the Yankees hat fashionable. People wear Yankees merch because they think it’s cool. You sell a lot of merchandise and you make a lot of money.
I think that Yankees fanbase is greatly exaggerated. I doubt many people from around the world follow baseball. They just buy the gear and wear it because it’s cool. I think the actual amount of people that follow baseball and follow the Yankees is a lot smaller than people think.

Maera and that sephirot- are dead wrong, i’m an angels fan and the yankees are financial empires because they do have a huge following and they win, people love winners and sadly but baseball would be dead without them, i’m glad the angels play them in the playoffs because alot of people watched and it got the angels some exposure:) and i’m just being honest, people need to take off their hater shades and tell the truth, the yankees are baseball and that’s that
when the yankees are the playoffs and worldseries how are the ratings from when they are not in the playoffs?
