I guess it’s because a lot of today’s younger generation are starting to become obese at a very high rate. And they are trying to motivate people into some sort of fitness while doing something they enjoy(video games). Here is how:
There is a massive population out there that didnt give a hoot about games consoles. These people like most people enjoy playing games. But they are totally turned off by words like sonic and metroid – the words you use.
They associated it with being dull and geeky thats a fact.
Nintendo thought how do we get these people to give us their money?
Answer : make something that these people will like! and they will buy it.
They attracted them by using sport and healthy fresh thinking games.
These people include parents, and thoughtful parents who dont want there kids sitting in front of a screen like a vegetable. Hence parents (& grandparents!) will go out and spend huge sums of money to get something ‘good’ for their kids.
I think i have made my point. Not the answer you want is it.. But thats the answer.
