Bats are made from hardwoods, generally ash, but sometimes birch, hickory, or maple. The wood is put in a giant oven called a kiln and heated for a number of hours until the moisture is around 6%. The peices of wood are cut to size and put on a duplicating lathe. These lathes use a template to cut the same demensions every time. The bat is then finished and heat stamped or laser engraved with the label.
References :
This was shown on the Discovery Channel a few months ago. Was interesting. Google Louisvilleslugger.com (I'm guessing), or visit the Discovery Channel web site and search. Maybe mlb.com can steer you to it.
